GBAX.com ASUS EEE PC Review, Dec 12th 2007. In the box: EEE PC, Power supply, Soft Case, Manual.

Hello everyone, Craig here, nice to be back,

Imagine a laptop that did not make you fear for your very life when you carry it, and on top of that which didn't hurt your shoulder as it was so heavy. Oh yeah and that laptop bag, very stylish, if you are in to the getting-stabbed-through-the-eye-on-the-underground for it scene.

But wait, what's all this then? A laptop which is actually portable? One which boots in 10 seconds, one which does away with windows and works perfectly out the box?

Is this a mac owners worst nightmare? A system which REALLY just works? Yeah, stop kidding yourself mac owners, this PC really does it.

Yes, yes it does, as ASUS have made a tiny linux based laptop which JUST WORKS.

Seriously. I sat down, turned it on, told it the time and BAM I am at the desktop. I hit 'Wireless networks' and it finds and connects to the office router, then I'm looking at the BBC news webpage in firefox. This took me maybe 60 seconds from turning it on. How amazing is that? just consider all the SHIT you have to go though with a windows laptop to do that.

Firefox is great at the 800*480 res, seems they have tweaked it a little so web pages fit really well, and it is FAST, even with flash programs it feels really nice. Dare I say faster than our windows 1.1ghz laptop?

So I go to last.fm and enter 'pet shop boys' and it works, so now I have music. What else can this thing do? Oh look, open office! It ran with the music still playing in the background and I'm writing... a review. This very review. Right now.

This is quite astonishing. A non geek would not notice this does not run windows, they would probably notice just how easy it is to use and how fast. It's based on x86 but runs Linux, it CAN run windows if you install a copy but I don't know why you would. I'm loving this little device and showing it to everyone who comes near me.

Sure the keys are smaller and layed out slightly different to a normal laptop but you get used to them after a hour with it, and it's only so they can make this thing so small. consider this: Do you carry a book around with you? Well then you can carry this, and chav scum will think it IS a book in your bag, and we all know it's scientifically proven they can't read so why would they steal that? EXACTLY. It's WIN WIN. Double win win if you actually put a book cover around your laptop, something by some bastard like Dean Cuntz should do the trick.

Yes it can run emulators, SNES, Megadrive etc. I dare say PSX will work too, I've not tried it. It does have 3 USB ports and VGA out so you could use it as a VERY nice classic games machine. Battery seems to last around 3 hours. I took it in the bathroom. I actually lay in the bath using the internet like some sort of loser internet addicted geek. But the size and weight made it seem fun, like it was ok and acceptable to do such things.

Speaking of weight it is so light I didn't quite believe it, it feels like a toy laptop it's so light, but it's all there, all solid and of course all solid state! 4GB of space with an SD expansion slot - since 8GB cards are so cheap now you can easily goto 12GB for very little and soon 16GB should be cheap too. And speaking of that the 4GB SD card I put in happened to have series 2 of Dexter in DIVX on it and the EEE played it perfectly (full screen or in a window - Mplayer).

Now I think about it I'm doing all this on battery power, it isn't plugged in.

Oh and it has a webcam, a smooth easy to use and record webcam. And a microphone. And and and just buy this thing. It's got a perminant place in my life now, I know this after just 2 days of use. If you want to get a member of your family online who is scared of computers it's a pefect gift. My Gran could use this.

Oh and it's £229 inc VAT. Crazy. No wonder we are currently selling one of these every 4-5 minutes. I'm not actually going to go on anymore about it. Just get one, if you don't like it for some reason send it back for a refund. I'm that sure you will love it.
